Brentwood, in brief

Brentwood is in Williamson County. The city describes itself as a suburb of Nashville, incorporated on April 15, 1969.

Its fast facts list a 2020 population of 45,373, an area of 42 square miles, and zoning that is 90 percent residential, 5 percent commercial, and 5 percent service institutional.

Which office permits the job

Inside the city, the office is Planning and Codes. The contact block lists 5211 Maryland Way, Brentwood, TN 37027, (615) 371-0060, open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Email [email protected]. Apply through the online permitting portal.

Inspections are by appointment. Call the 24-hour inspection line at (615) 661-7077, or schedule one in your online account.

Inspectors are in the field from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Permit fees can be paid online or by check made out to The City of Brentwood. The fee instructions say a check can be dropped at Planning and Codes / Permits, 5211 Maryland Way, Brentwood, TN 37024-0788.

The department's contact block prints the same street with ZIP code 37027. Call the office if you are addressing an envelope.

A mailing address in Franklin or Brentwood can still be unincorporated Williamson County. Codes Compliance enforces zoning in the unincorporated areas, including building permits and swimming pool fence inspections.

The office is at 1320 West Main Street, Suite 400, Franklin, TN 37064, (615) 790-5736, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. File a county building permit through the electronic plan review system, and call Building Codes at (615) 790-5718 if you need help.

Call with the street address before anyone applies, so the permit goes to the right office.

Hiring a pool company

City ordinance section 14-183 says no swimming pool or spa work shall be undertaken within the city until a permit has been issued. The city has adopted the 2018 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, including appendices A and B, for residential and commercial pools.

The portal has applications for a Residential Swimming Pool, a Residential Hot Tub or Spa, a Residential Pool House, and a Commercial Swimming Pool.

The city's adopted residential codes also list the 2017 National Electrical Code as regulated and enforced by the State Fire Marshal's Office.

Hiring a roofer

Tennessee requires a contractor's license before someone contracts, bids, or negotiates a price on a project of $25,000 or more as the prime contractor, the person who contracts with the owner.

A roofing subcontractor needs a license when the roofing portion alone is $25,000 or more, including materials, equipment, and labor. The Board also says a licensed contractor carries general liability insurance and workers' compensation, unless they have an exemption.

Look the company up at verify.tn.gov.

A separate home improvement license covers some residential work from $3,000 to $24,999, and only in Bradley, Davidson, Hamilton, Haywood, Knox, Marion, Robertson, Rutherford, and Shelby counties. Williamson County is outside that list.

On a smaller job here, ask to see a certificate of insurance.

On the city's application list, Commercial Roof is the application for a reroof or tear-off, and Storm Repair is the application for work related to storm damage. Residential Renovation / Remodel / Repair is described as remodeling the interior of an existing structure.

A house roof is not given its own application name. Ask Planning and Codes which application to file before a house roof starts.

Use Storm Repair when the work is storm damage.
